At Huls Orthodontics, we aim to help patients address common issues like crooked or crowded teeth. Braces are one of the best options for correcting those problems. However, there are several myths about this treatment that cause people to avoid it. These are the most common, debunked.

After Braces, Your Teeth Stay Permanently Straight

Although this is partly true, it's also partially false. The myth is that once you've completed treatment with orthodontic braces, you no longer have to worry about your teeth going back out of alignment. In reality, after your treatment, you must use a retainer nightly to keep your teeth in their proper position. You may have to wear it daily and then nightly thereafter depending on the type of retainers you have. You may also need a new retainer after about two years. In Champaign and Monticello, we strive to provide our patients with the appliances and knowledge they need for lifetime retention.

Only Children and Teens Need Braces

A common myth our office hears from patients about braces is that only children and teens need them. This is not true as adults also have problems with their teeth that can be corrected with treatment. Although most people associate kids with needing braces, adults can also benefit from them.

You Can't Practice Proper Oral Hygiene with Braces

Some people are under the misconception that you can't practice proper oral hygiene with braces. Although it's more difficult to reach certain areas with a mouth full of wires and brackets, this is not true. There are oral hygiene products specially made with braces wearers in mind. Electric toothbrushes work well for cleaning your teeth. Flossers and floss threaders are designed to get under the wire to make it easier to remove excess food particles from under the gumline. We provide our patients with the oral hygiene tools and instructions you need to keep your mouth healthy!

Braces Are Painful

One of the biggest myths that scare people out of getting orthodontic braces is that they are very painful. Although there is an adjustment period after braces are placed, after a while you won't even feel them. As your teeth move into their proper position, there may be some discomfort when you need adjustments, but it's minor. Most of the time, you won't even notice your braces.

Everyone Will Notice Your Braces

A common myth about braces is that everyone will notice them in your mouth. We do offer a variety of treatment options ranging from metal brackets, clear brackets, and clear aligners. Clear brackets are mostly unnoticeable while clear aligners are virtually invisible. With these discreet options, you can hold your head up high with confidence that most people won't even know you have braces.

Braces Are Only to Straighten Your Teeth

Although braces are often used to straighten teeth, this is not their only use. They can also correct crowding, jaw issues, spacing, and bite alignment problems. If you have an overbite, underbite, or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), braces can bring you relief.

Braces can treat various issues with your teeth or jaw, and we are here to help. Contact Huls Orthodontics at our Monticello, IL office at (217) 762-7313 or our Champaign, IL office at (217) 352-4334 to schedule an appointment.
